Sound

In the first part of the clip no non-diegtic sound is used only dialogue is used. The sound effect of the envolope makes it seem awkward as it's a bussiness transaction, as there is no soundtrack it may make the audience feel slightly awkward as well. The locking of the door is emphasized because its an issue, he feels vulnerable with the door locked. The dialogue is punctured by awkward silences this draws attention to his disability, and they are in an unusual situation for both of them as she perhaps isn't used to doing business with a disabled person and he have never been in that situation before.

There is a diegetic soundtrack of classical music when the dad gets into his van, it is inappropriate to how he is feeling as the music is fast and upbeat whereas he feels anxious and worried about his son. Sound effects are used the pressing of the horn and the moving of the windows and seats emphasizes his nerves.

A sound bridge is used and carries over from the man in the van to the room, non diegetic soundtrack makes you feel sympathy for the the disabled guy, it's mellow music and the dialogue is reflected by the music as he's telling the call girl how she's never been touched. In the last soundtrack a harmonica is used, harmonicas are normally used in the blues which creates a mood of sadness

How editing constucts the representation of disability

Throughout the whole of the clip continuity editing is used. At the very begining hard cuts are used to emphasize the tension between the characters, there is an eye line match, this is trying to create awkwardness between the three characters as we see everything from the boy in the wheelchairs eyeline. A close up of the call is used, it shows her looking down then cuts to a medium close up dad looking awkwardly at the call girl, normally you wouldn't take your dad to something like that so the awkwardness is inhanced by both him being in a wheelchair and the fact he has to take his dad with him.

There is match on action when the dad picks his son up out of the wheelchair and a second match on action when he places him on the bed, it seemless action. There is another eye line match from the boys point of view he is in the bed and she is locking the door, we can tell he feels uncomfortable and vunerable because the eye line match draws attention to this.

A cross cut from the bedroom to outside of the dad getting into the van could show that he hasn't gone far incase his son needs him for any reason. Shot and reverse shot of when they are having a conversation are quick tranistions which makes the conversation seem awkward.

An eye line match/point of view shot to show the window where supposedly the boy and call girl are, this shows the dad is worried about his son because he has a disability, the eye line match draws attention to this. The angle of the camera doesn't change through a series of jump cuts this highlights that he prehaps bored, nervous or worrried. The last tranistion is a cross cut back to the bedroom.

Camera movements and shot to represent age

The clip starts with a dolly shot, this type of camera movement is used so we as the audience can appreciate the men working this shows age as only older men would be working with tools such as hammers and large pieces of wood.

At the beginning of the next scene it starts off with a long shot and pans across the court yard so we know where the girl is, it then goes into a medium long shot to show what she is wearing, she is wearing casual clothes to show that she is a teenager and dresses for comfort instead of practicality.

When the young girl gets into the truck we see a close up of her face she looks confused as to what to do and doesn't know how to drive, this suggests that she is still young. A wide shot of the area suggests that it isn't really an area for teenagers and young people so you can assume that older people live around that location.
Medium long shot shows the old man standing behind the cars that have just crashed, we can see his clothing and this leads us to believe he is a teacher of some sort as his clothes don't match but he is in smart but casual wear. The crash in the foreground of the shot is to maybe represent the conflict between the young and old generations.

The panning motion from the young boy to the man and vice versa shows the height difference and that the man is older and more in control, a close up of the young girl and we are at her eye level to show how vulnerable she is which shows her true age. A two shot shows the older women is being protective over the young girl we can see you cares and has a motherly instinct towards the young girl through her body language and facial features.

A slightly low angle shot shows the men to be more powerful, and although the young girl isn't in the room with them it's seen at her eye level and we see them how she would see them. Still at eye level with the young girl we see he looking up at the man in a way a child would if they were being told off  by a parent.

The next scene is of the girl in her room a tilt is used to revel the note she leaves behind and the magazines on the bed this shows she is girly and still young young as she is reading teenage magazines, there is a pan to show a teddy and another pan ti show pink lights and pictures, there is then a slow zoom onto one of the pictures to show her emotion in this scene, only a young person would feel this way after a petty argument and is slightly over reacting.

The camera then moves outside and tilts upwards the camera being outside makes us feel like an outsider like the young girl does this makes the audience feel sorry for her and we see her as vulnerable. A medium close up of the old women emphasizes the emotions and maternal feeling she has towards the young girl.

Now the young girl has run away we are eye level with the man, the last shot is a close up of the mans face  this highlights his age as we see worry and guilt much like that of a father

Representation of age in mise en scene

I watched a clip and now have to analyse the mise en scene and show how different techniques such as costume, props, setting and body language are used to represent age.

In the beginning of the clip we see the men out working with tools, such as hammers and planks of wood as though they were building something, we associate building work with strong masculine men, not teenagers or women, this part in the clip makes men seem dominant and the women and children inferior to them. The men are wearing work clothes whereas the younger people are more casually dressed maybe for comfort.

We can tell that the girl is young because she is unsure on how to drive the truck, this is highlighted through her body language and facial expressions we can see she is clearly confused as she is looking at everything in the truck and trying to remember what is what. As she drives away she drives into another car, in the car is a man smartly but casually dressed much like a teacher and none of his clothes match showing he hasn't put a lot of effort into his appearance as much as maybe a younger person would, he is dressed in clothes that normally only the older generation would wear and he has beard which is also associated with the older generation. When the man and young boy arrive to see what happened the girl immediately cowards away towards the man in a child-like manner showing her venerability and how young she really is.

The man and older man walk into a room with wooden paneling which shows it isn't very teenage like and is an older persons room, we can also tell that the room is for older people as there is a decanter with brandy in it, brandy is normally associated with older generations and not teenagers or young children also alcohol isn't for young people.

When the man is shouting at the young girl she shouts back 'I hate you' this shows she is having a tantrum and is still very young as she has no other comeback. By the man shouting/telling her off he is acting like a parent towards the young girl this highlights that he is older and more mature than she is as he takes control of the situation.

The clip then moves on to show men with tools working hard, again there are no children to show that this is a manly job and you have to be strong to be able to do it. The girl is shown to be a typical girly teenager as her room is pink, decorated with pink lights and photos, furthermore on her bed there are magazines and teddy bear to emphasize that she is still a child and needs to be taken care of.

In the last scene the older women is hunched over. Her body language and facial features show that she is worried for the girl as she has run off, as she is worried for the girl it also shows she cares about her like a mother or grandmother would for their child or grandchild.

This clip represents age through different ways such as costume, body language, location and dialogue, it shows the men to be more dominant and the girl to be child like and she relies on the people who care for her.

This is a clip from Jane Eyre where the man is talking to Jane, he gives her some money as she doesn't have much, in those time women never really had money so she relies on the man to give her some

Key Concepts of Media

The four key media concepts are media language, representation, audience and institution

  • Media language is the nuts and bolts of media, the words we need to learn are cimematography which is the type of shots for example long shot, close up, mid shit, editing is the tranistions between shots for example cut, fade, sound- non diagetic and diagetic and mise en scene which is everything in the scene. 
  • Representation is how people are seen in certain groups
  • Audience is the ways of describing and appealing to consumers of media
  • Institution is the producders and regulators of the media

The exam tests our knowlegde of each concept by putting it in to two sections, section A is media language and representation where we will have to analyse the representation in a 5 minute clip of a british tv drama, we will have to write about how the media language builds a representation of one of the following,
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Regional identity
  • Disability/ ability 
  • Class/ social status 
In section B of the exam we will have to answer questions on the film industry using two case study films.
